This project is based on the Octagon Donut formula by Holly Chayes, from her second book on Shawl Geometry. I was looking for a project to use up yarn left over from several sweater projects when I came across this shawl formula.

To begin, you will need to take some body measurements and knit a gauge swatch. A little simple math is required to calculate the number of stitches to cast on. I did a narrow mock cable band for the neckline then proceeded to set up my stitch markers as directed by the Octagon Donut formula.

I used a sock yarn and a mohair silk yarn carried together throughout. You could theoretically use one solid color and then use a mixture of other leftover bits you might have in your stash, provided the gauge remains consistent. I used a heathered yarn and a variegated yarn to create the soft striped effect you see in the pictures. I used about 460m of each yarn. For reference purposes, I’m about 5’11” tall, 190 lbs with a shoulder circumference of 44 inches.

I increased every sixth round, nine time, then one more on the 18 round to give the garment a sloping shape to hug my shoulders. I suggest trying it on a regular intervals to determine when you’ve made enough increases every six rows to reach the outer edges of your shoulders. After that, I suggest increasing every 18th round until you get the desired length.

This is a highly customizable project and a quick knit. Once you get the hang of it, it will be simple to adjust to different yarn gauges and desired sizes.
