Knitting Jenny 63: Fair Isle Tam o’ Shanter
Knitting Jenny Pattern 63: Fair Isle Inspired Tam o’ Shanter is a hat of Scottish origin that features a colorful design with triangular segments that converge into a complex kaleidoscopic crown.
Tam o’ Shanter is an eponym. Tam o’ Shanter is the name of the titular character in the narrative poem, written in 1790, by Scottish poet Robert Burns (1759-1796). Tam is the Scottish sobriquet (or nickname) for Thomas.
This book includes knitting patterns, motifs, and instructions in the following inclusive formats:
- Color Chart
- Grayscale Chart
- Written Instructions
- Illustrations
In addition to the color chart, a grayscale chart design is included to enable the knitter to envision personal color preferences for Knitting Jenny Pattern 63, by seeing the chart and motifs alone, in grayscale, without color distraction.
Knitting Jenny Pattern 63 includes instructions for a medium size and a large size, with additional instructions for size customization.
The Tam o’ Shanter on the front cover of the book is a medium size, which fits an adult head.
The following tools are suggested for the pattern.
- 2.0mm knitting needles (for the brim ribbing)

The Tam o’ Shanter is knit circularly, and is constructed as follows: cast on, knit the brim ribbing, rapidly increase, knit the stranded colorwork of the head, then systematically decrease at the crown.
The pattern requires three colors of wool in a 2 ply jumper weight (or any fingering weight or 2 ply equivalent to a 4 ply).
Knitting Jenny Pattern 63 features 100% pure Shetland wool from the company, Jamieson and Smith, also known as Shetland Wool Brokers.
The gauge (or tension) for Knitting Jenny Pattern 63 is:
- 34 stitches and 40 rows to 4 inches (10 centimeters) over the stranded colorwork pattern, knit circularly with 3.0mm knitting needles, after washing, blocking, drying.
The book includes a discussion of Color Dominance to support consistent, uniform stitch definition.
The book includes 9 illustrations and 31 pages.
