Knitty Gritty: Child's Pinafore Dress
Here’s a pattern that I really enjoyed designing. It appeared nearly fully formed in my head, and I had instant visions of it being worn everywhere from the beach, to a winter party or a wedding.
This dress combines unfussy lines with a pretty frill; you can choose colour combinations to suit your little one and accessorise the pattern with anything from knitted flowers to buttons and sequins.
The frill at the bottom produces a really tidy edge, and gives a weight to the skirt that makes it hang elegantly. The straps can be adjusted to suit, so that you can fit it to your kid as they grow taller (if it starts to look too short, you could extend its life by pairing it with trousers underneath, or with bright tights and wellies).
You can knit the dress in any double knit yarn – the most widely available of weights. I love it in cotton for summer, warm wool for winter, and what about a silk or bamboo yarn for a special occasion? Perfect!
