I love a good poncho. Worn over the top of other clothing, it’s an excellent layering piece, and allows for the knitter to wear bulky or fine weight items underneath. I realize that ponchos have received a bad rap from the highly colored and chevroned images of the 70s flower power movement, but with this new design, I hope to allow a knitter to really show off their love of knitting. This would be perfect for an outdoor knitting festival in the early spring or fall as well as a great blanket for covering up while you knit away the winter cold in your pajamas. The turtleneck is optional, so feel free to use your personal preference.

NOTES: Worked from the top down. All colorwork has been charted and words are knit upside down. Colorwork may be done in as many or as few colors as the knitter wishes. But for best readability stripes should be worked on alternate rounds. Written to include a long-folded turtleneck feel free to shorten to a one inch ribbed crew neck, or slightly longer 2.5 inch folded neckline.

SAMPLE, size 1, was knit using Brown Sheep Nature Spun Worsted in colors 403W Tropical Surf, 158 W Fanciful Blue, N78W Turquoise Wonder, 303W Sea Spray, N21W Mallard, 135W Hurricane Seas and 103W Deep Sea and weighed 490 g and used 1130 yds.

SAMPLE, size 2, was knit using Brown Sheep Nature Spun Worsted in colors 115W Bit of Blue, 116W Blue Boy, 120W Cresting Waves 137W Cobalt Blue, 153W Fanciful Blue, 505W Blue Marina and N36W China Blue; weighed 574g and used 1406 yds.

NEEDLE: US size 7 (4.50 mm) 16” (41 cm) circular needle OR size needed to obtain gauge.
US size 7 (4.50 mm) 24” (61 cm) or 32” (81 cm)
