Tree knots – called Burls – are signs of stress. But they also show the strength in being able to adapt and grow in a way that protects. A burl is formed as a last-ditch effort to save the tree’s life after an injury or infection. A burl protects a tree like a scar. Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty and rarity.

The Knotted Root Headband is a simple ear-warmer with a wrapped yarn knot to represent the beauty of burls. Made with cozy bulky yarn to keep your ears warm and stylish during the cooler months, this is a great project for beginners and for using up leftover yarn in your stash.

One size fits most; pattern can be adjusted depending on the circumference of the head and the desired width of ear coverage.

Getting the exact gauge is not important; the knitter will work to meet their own measurements.

Yarn: Bulky (Loops and Threads Charisma or similar)

Needles: 5 mm / US 8
