Koru
The Koru (Māori for loop or coil) is a spiral shape based on the appearance of a new unfurling silver fern frond. It is an integral symbol in Māori art, carving and tattooing, where it symbolizes new life, growth, strength and peace. Its shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, while the inner coil suggests returning to the point of origin.
The hat begins with an Embossed Moss Stitch Rib, and there are written instructions as well as a colorful chart for the stranded colorwork. The fern fronds topping the hat are tendrils made using Cat Bordhi’s method, adapted from Annie Modesitt’s technique. A how-to video link is provided for working the tendrils.
