Kraai
The Kraai Mitts are one of eleven engaging patterns from Marlisle: A New Direction in Knitting by Anna Maltz – a beautiful, 160 page, full-colour, litho-printed book packed with photographs, knowledge, anecdotes and opinion to introduce you to the technique of Marlisle. It features 22 interesting yarns from dedicated small-producers while celebrating the breadth of our knitting community. Available from www.annamaltz.com and friendly yarn shops around the world. Launch date 10 February, 2018.
A speedy, engrossing little project inspired by old fashioned leather driving gloves with arrows on the fronts that echo birds in flight or road markings. The short Cuff is ribbed on the palm side only, framing the front and back of the mitts. In combination with decreases in the final rounds (to stop the mitts from flaring out with wear and movement), this makes for a well-fitting pair of mitts that will keep you entertained as you knit them.
SIZING
S (M, L)
Designed to be worn with minimal ease around hand.
Cuff circumference (to fit wrist and get in and out of mitt): 17 (18.5, 20.5)cm/6¾ (7¼, 8)”
Hand circumference (between thumb and knuckles): 20 (22, 23.5)cm/8 (8½, 9¼)”
Length (from cast-on edge to tip of mitt): 15 (16, 17)cm/6 (6¼, 6¾)” long
(Measurements clearly illustrated on a schematic drawing in the pattern.)
YARN
Yarn A: Filature Valgaudemar, Valgaudemar 2 Fils (4ply/fingering; 100% French wool; 175m/191y per 50g /1¾oz)
Burel x 1
Yarn B: Birlinn Yarn Company, 4ply (4ply/fingering; 100% wool, Hebridean and Cheviot blend; 175m/191y per 50g /1¾oz)
Reef or Moor x 1
You will likely be able to knit a pair of size S mitts using just half a skein of Yarn A, but you will need more than half for both size M and L. Because most of the patterning happens in Yarn B, count on needing a full ball of that.
GAUGE
22 stitches x 40 rows = 10cm x 10cm/4” x 4” over garter stitch using Yarn A&B held together after blocking.
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
3.25mm (US 3) needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round.
