This beginner-friendly pattern consists of 2 parts, the main body and the base, which are stuffed and stitched together. Conceptually, the pattern is similar to the kueh lapis sagu amigurumi.

It measures around 5.7cm long by 2.7cm wide by 3.7cm high, depending on hook size, yarn weight and crochet tension. The finished amigurumi’s appearance can differ slightly also depending on the material used to stuff it. Foam or sponge will give it a more structured, neater appearance, whereas poly fibrefill will give it a chubbier appearance.

This amigurumi was inspired by a local traditional confection in Southeast Asia, the kueh salat, also known as kueh seri muka and pulut serikaya. It is a two-layered steamed confection comprising of a bottom layer of steamed glutinous rice flavoured with coconut milk and pandan, and an upper layer of silky custard made of eggs, coconut milk and pandan. Although a plain snack, it is an aromatic harmony of contrasts, with the savoury, sticky rice layer and the sweet, soft custard layer.
