Kurzeme, Rucava, p 404
This ethnographic mitten from Rucava, Latvia begins with a picot edge on the cuff. The mitten calls for four colors in all. Both the cuff and upper mitten are knit in three colors.
While the mitten in the book uses black for the background plus 3 contrast colors - sky blue, green and royal blue, there is a mitten in the Liepajas Museum with the same graph with contrast colors of purple and gold, with a touch of both a pale turquoise and white in the upper mitten. This mitten is notable for having a round decrease that is achieved by decreasing at the end of each of the four needles as was typical in years past. The museum example uses a different chart for the cuff with contrast colors in pale turquoise, gold and white. A small band just above the picot edge is in coral, white and yellow. The small band above the cuff is in pale turquoise, white and a deep pink. This is a stunning example of the workmanship and creativity of the Rucavas ethnographic mittens.
Changes in yarn and/or needles will influence the gauge. Check your gauge in pattern before casting on.
Rucava sits in the southwest corner of Latvia near the Baltic and the border with Lithuania.
