Kuychi means rainbow in Quechua language from the Cusco region (Peruvian Andes).
The rainbow is the leitmotif of this machine / hand-knitted loose-fitting sweater design. Triangular sets of thin rainbow-colours stripes (worked in short-rows) on a grey background are the main feature. Rainbow colours appear once more in the hand-knitted garter stitch ribs of neck and body, and again in the asymmetrical stripes on the sleeves.
Knitted with a light fingering yarn in seven bright colours, the design can be easily adapted to other yarn weights.
I combined machine-knitted main pieces with hand-knitted ribs, with charming results.
The only special skill necesary to knit this project is short-rows knitting. But even if you don´t, this simple and easy to follow pattern is very suitable to make an attempt at this technique. For the general method there are many tutorials online (with at least 3 alternatives), trying first with a small sample to gather confidence is advisable.
The instructions are based on, and supported by, several detailed diagrams, to make it easily adapted to different machines, and complemented with short written instructions for both machine- and hand-knitting the whole pattern.
