Released in 2000 after a lengthy production process, The Emperor’s New Groove featured a new kind of comedic animation that was a departure from the musical style of the Disney animated films of the era. Filled with quick-witted dialogue, slapstick humor, and visual gags, Disney’s fortieth animated feature tells the tale of spoiled Emperor Kuzco, who is accidentally turned into a llama and must rely on kindly villager Pacha to regain both his kingdom and his humanity. Set in an ancient Andes-inspired region, animators visited Machu Picchu and surrounding Peru to draw inspiration for the rich color palette, carvings, art, architecture, and textiles in the film. Artists also visited zoos and llama farms to study the mannerisms and movements of the animals for when Kuzco undergoes his transformation from royalty to livestock courtesy of his hilarious yet vengeful ex-advisor Yzma.

A replica of the poncho Pacha’s wife, Chicha, makes for Kuzco at the end of the film, this poncho is the perfect travel garment to keep you warm and comfortable while on a long hike back to the palace with your best friend! Beginning with a garter collar, the poncho is worked from the top down in the round. The stockinette body increases out with simple M1R and M1L increases, making it easy to lengthen or shorten if desired. The llama patch is done postknitting using intarsia with an i-cord bind off border worked around all sides, then sewn onto the front of the garment.
