La Scalinata is a mosaic-knit shawl with a stair-step zigzag design. Its adaptable size and rhythmic stitch pattern make it both engaging and meditative to knit, perfect for creative color play while remaining approachable to a wide range of skill levels.

The design was inspired by Scalinata Lardarina in Cinque Terre— a staircase that was quite a challenge for me, especially as someone who doesn’t enjoy exercise. Fortunately, unlike climbing the stairs, this shawl pattern is not difficult at all!

This asymmetrical triangular shawl is knitted sideways, offering a flexible and customizable design. Its size can be easily adjusted by adding or removing repeats. The pattern includes both written instructions and charts. Only one color is worked on at a time. Repeats are short and easy to memorize. No purls. The pattern can be worked in any gauge with appropriate needles.

Skill level: adventurous beginner

SIZE SHOWN: wingspan 94”, depth 22”

Yardage Information

The given yardage is based on the largest size, which requires approximately 3 full skeins of yarn. The ratio between the Main Color (MC) and Contrast Color (CC) is 1:2. This means for every 1 skein of MC, you’ll need 2 skeins of CC.

For the Contrast Color (CC), you can use a variety of options:

  • Toe Sets (6 Toes = 2 full skeins)

  • Mini Skein Sets (10 mini skeins, each approximately 80-90 yards, = 2 full skeins)

  • Color-Changing Yarn

  • Leftovers

Yardage estimates for the smaller sizes using Miss Babs Yummy 2-ply Toes:

  • Small: MC- 1 Toe, CC - 2 Toes, approx. wingspan 56”, depth 12”.
  • Medium: MC- 2 Toes, CC - 4 Toes, approx., wingspan 80”, depth 17”.

Instructions are available in 2 formats:
