The professorial Laboratory Pullover has the rugged look of traditional Dutch fishing sweaters but the luxurious feel of fine merino and the modern style of seamless set-in sleeves picked up and worked with short-rows. The rope-and-ladder cables and simple bands of textured stitch will keep you warm whether you’re in a chilly lab, in a library, or on a northern scientific exploration.

Two pattern files are now available; choose the version that works best for you: One is of the original pattern, the second is an additional alternate for which the upper three sizes are slightly smaller, but in this version, the pattern meets up satisfyingly at the shoulders for all five sizes, whereas in the original, the pattern meets up for the first two sizes, but has the pattern offset at the shoulders for the upper three sizes. Both versions now include text version of charts. Alternate version sizes are:
101.5 (111, 120, 129.5, 138.5) cm 40 (43.75, 47.25, 51, 54.5)“ in circumference at underarm.

Yarn Sugar Bush Yarns Crisp (100% extra fine superwash merino; 95 yd / 1¾ oz): #2023 deep sea blue, 18 (20, 23, 25, 28) balls.

Needles Sizes 4 (3.5 mm) and 5 (3.75 mm): 32” circular and set of double-pointed. Size 5 (3.75 mm): 16” circular. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions Markers; removable markers; cable needle; stitch holders; tapestry needle.

Gauge 22 sts and 40 rnds = 4” in Seed st on larger needles; 26 sts and 36 rows = 4” in charted patt on larger needles, unstretched.

NOTES

• The body of this pullover is worked in the round from the lower edge to the underarm, then the front and back are worked separately back and forth. After the shoulders are joined, sleeve stitches are picked up and the sleeve cap is shaped with short-rows. The sleeve is then worked in the round from the top down.
• The Lower Body and Sleeve charts are worked in rounds and the Upper Body and Cap charts are worked back and forth in rows, beginning with a wrong-side row. When working in rounds, work every chart row as a right-side row.
• When working sleeve shaping, if there are not enough stitches to cross a 4-stitch cable, cross 2 stitches over 1 stitch if you have 3 stitches left, or cross 1 stitch over 1 stitch if you have 2 stitches left.
