Inspiration:
I recently learned that the lace snowflake ornaments hung in each window of my mother’s house were not, in fact, made by my grandmother. But bought in response to young children (myself and my brother) who liked to pull fragile ornaments off the tree. Despite their commercial origin, I loved these delicate forms and now enjoy my own creations hung in a window or used as tree ornaments.

This collection features 10 snowflakes of varying size and form, some pointy, some round, some in broad open lace, some with flat plates of double crochet. Despite the reputation for perfect geometry, very few snowflakes are ever perfect or even symmetrical, so if a picot floret is forgotten, or a triple crochet ends up a double, it’s just nature!

Pattern Details:
This pattern includes written instructions in US crochet terminology, side-by-side with universal crochet charts. These snowflakes are all worked in the round in hexagonal repeats and can be followed rather intuitively within that pattern.

Included is a simple spray starch recipe used for stiffening the snowflakes during blocking so they hold their shape when hanging.

Gauge is not crucial. While I sized these with cotton crochet thread to be starched into a hanging ornament, you could size up your yarn and hook appropriately to make seasonal doilies, trivets, or appliques. It’s up to you!

Difficulty:
This pattern is intended for the intermediate to advanced creator, but the confident beginner who is comfortable with most basic crochet stitches shouldn’t have much issue. This would be an excellent teaching piece for anyone desiring to switch from written to charted instructions (or vice-versa) as each snowflake is on a single page with the chart available next to the written pattern.
