I have exploring design possibilities of diagonal mesh lace lately. One idea that popped into my mind was a sideways hat. The left and right leaning mesh create points that sew together nicely for a hat crown. I had some chunky Alpaca on hand and worked it up in the 2 hours my husband was in an improv performance to benefit our local food bank. It is a simple design, easily worked up in the dark!

After finishing, the shape called to mind an ancient helmet. I had the song “The Warrior” in my head while working on this pattern and here are my parody lyrics with a lace knitting theme:

“Workin’ on a hard lace pattern,
Knit! Purl! I am Lace Warrior.
Well, I am Lace Warrior.
K 2 together, Yarn over,
Did you remember a lifeline, Lace Warrior.”

I welcome additional lyric suggestions!

Alpaca having no memory, I include instructions for a stabilizing cord with a loopy flower end.

The instructions below will fit an adult head size. If wanting to make a custom size, start with the cast on the length that equals the length of the bottom of the ears to the center of the crown of head. Measure the head circumference and divide by 8, make each section 1/8 the size of the circumference. Work alternating left and right leaning mesh lace for 8 total sections.

This also makes a nice cowl once the back seam has been worked.
