Mt. St. Helens was known by many names: Loowit to some, Louwala-Clough by others, or simply the “Lady of Fire”. She was originally described as a wrinkled old woman, but granted eternal life and beauty by Chief Tyee Sahale. The Chief’s sons, Klickitat and Wy’east, fell in love with the Lady of Fire. They fought terrible battles over her which made Chief Tyee Sahale angry. He smote the three lovers; but even as he punished them, he loved them. So, where each lover fell, he raised up a mighty mountain. The colors shown here represent Lady of Fire in all her glory – snow and fiery lava.

The Lady of Fire hat is made with stranded knitting and takes four colors: two skeins of the main color, one skein of the dark color and a mini skein of each of the contrast colors. The color patterns are shown in charts.

This hat is knit in the round and starts with a provisional crochet cast on.

The pattern includes one size (21”) for an average adult.
