Translated from Frances Lambert’s My Knitting Book (Second Series), 1847.

Not much use as a hat these days–but check out the wonderful four-row stitch pattern used throughout. It blends adjacent shades like watercolor and though it looks like stockinette with an occasional garter row, it lies flat and does not curl. Little treasures like this are all over knitting books from the nineteenth century, waiting to be rediscovered!

By the way, a test with a borrowed baby indicates that using a heavier (say, worsted-weight) yarn with appropriate needles would turn out a beautiful baby bonnet.
