My teenage son wanted an afghan that would remind him of being in a forest by a lake. Together we brainstormed ideas for the perfect lap-sized blanket, and now he loves his straight-sided hexagon afghan in shades of blue, green, and brown.

This design is easily adaptable for different colors and different dimensions, and is a great project to do for your favorite kid. Getting him or her involved in color choices makes it fun, and builds some eager anticipation for the finished product.

An older child can even help with the crocheting!

REQUIRED SKILLS

You don’t need a whole lot of crochet skills to pull this off. If you can:

make a slip knot
chain
slip stitch
double-crochet
then you can do this.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

The blanket is an 11 hexagon by 9 hexagon lap sized afghan, and requires roughly 2700 yards of worsted weight yarn and a G (4mm) hook.

This pattern is available by itself, or in an ebook with a photo tutorial.
