LAMILLA
Lamilla is a triangular shawl with a leaf motif knit with twisted stitches. The leaves climb all the way from the bottom of the shawl and meet in the middle. It is knit top-down, with increases built into the leaves. It starts with only a few stitches at the top, increasing with one leaf on each side of the middle and one on each side at the edge every time you start over with a chart. Half of the stitches are twisted on both the right side and the wrong side, which may seem difficult at first but once you get into it, it’s actually a very comfortable repetitive pattern.
The sample shawl is knit in lovely, soft yarn from Jämtland sheep (see the author’s note on page 8 about yarn choice!). The Jämtland breed is a new cross between merino sheep and more traditional rural Swedish sheep. The idea is to create a wool that is next-to-skin soft, while still keeping the characteristics of the Swedish sheep, such as strength, fertility and excellent maternal instincts. The yarn used in this shawl comes from small-scale local organic production in the north of Sweden, and thus contributes to preserving the rural Swedish breeds as well as promotes a sustainable production. It is also spun at a local mini-mill so it is truly local in every aspect! The sheep farm Rudsby Jord & Skog can be reached on Facebook. Other locally produced Swedish yarns can be ordered directly from the farmer in Garnförmedlingen on Facebook.
