Large Fur Rug
This is a great way to use up yarn in your stash! This rug is two parts, a bottom that is your canvas and a top which is colorful fur. It makes for a beautiful squishy, soft rug that feels wonderful under your feet.
This is an original pattern designed by me to use up extra yarn in a practical way. The amounts of yarn listed in the pattern are estimates since I was using up various size balls and pieces of yarn from my stash.
Start with any worsted weight yarn (lighter colors are better for seeing your stitches in the second part of the project but you don’t see it when the rug is on the floor). Holding 2 strands of yarn together, cast on 85 stitches to a size 10.75 (7mm) needle. (Any needle close to the one listed will work because gauge is not important, it will only change the final size of your rug.) Knit in garter stitch until your rug measures 38” or is the length that you want. Final Rug size will be about 28’ x 38” depending on your gauge.
Now for the fun part! Using a size H crochet hook, single crochet fur yarn onto the garter stitch loops on the top of the rug. Hook into just one side of the garter stitch either the top or the bottom loop in the stitch. Again the size of the hook isn’t that important, H is what worked for me. Also I used up bits and pieces of fur yarn that I had so the amount that I used is an estimate.
Have fun! And please reference me and post pictures if you use my pattern. You can contact me at grigdon@sbcglobal.net for any questions.
