Larsdatter Slippers are my twenty-first slipper pattern. If you don’t know this already. I am sentimental and have often designed clothing with secret messages for my children. This pattern is very personal to me, but I figure we all need a lift just now, so I thought I would share these slippers and the thoughts behind them with you. Knitting is a little thing, really. But because I am sentimental, I somehow work that into everything I do and make. I am releasing this slipper on January 1st 2021, and hope this slipper brings you hope and good cheer in the new year.

This slipper is a variation of my Larsdatter motif I used in my Larsdatter sweater. I made Larsdatter for my daughter Anna on her 25th birthday (and made her and my daughter-in law Paula these slippers for Christmas that year.). I wanted to share with them all the hopes and dreams knit into this slipper. This motif is full of symbolism of hope, love, kindness, charity, growth, happiness, courage, understanding and goodwill, all represented by the tulips and hearts on the top of the slipper (John 13:34). The heel has a crown, to represent blessings and happiness. (Isaiah 35:10) The sole of slipper is a sea of stars (Mathew 2:10), that represent the stars in the heavens that bring us light in darkness. I often think that no matter where we live, we all live under this same beautiful canopy, we all are guided by this lovely light and we are all one. This is what this slipper means to me.

A bit more about the Larsdatter The Larsdatter yoke, mitten and motif and are named after my grandfather’s mother, whose parents lived out in the country in Norway. My grandfather lived in Oslo and loved visiting them on weekends.. I imagine that their home was filled with rosemaling. This slipper is full of symbolism and happiness with a nod to the whimsical painting that make homes cheery and bright even in the winter when the rest of the world is covered with snow. I have already made three pairs of slippers (in gold and white and blue and white), and I made each pair with a different DK-weight (or light worsted-weight) yarn. I used the same gauge with all three yarns. You could make this slipper with the beautiful Selkirk Worsted by Fleece and Harmony . Or a second pair with Shelter by Brooklyn Tweed , or you could make them with with Rauma Strikkegarn (pictured). I made them in either mustard with white, or blue with white. I also love the Rauma Strikkegarn dusty Norwegian blue (104).

Larsdatter comes in two sizes. The women’s small is a narrower slipper, and will fit US size 4 to 6.5(pictured). If you have made my slippers before, the larger size is about 6 rows longer than Ingeborg, Hansdatter or Sørine for a more generous fit, but the width is the same. It is the about the same size as my Randi Slipper. If you would like them to fit more like Sørine or Ingeborg, you could take out Rounds 41-43. I tailored this pattern to fit both medium to large and small feet. The two charts use the same gauge. I hope you love making these slippers for yourself or your loved ones.

Note: A pair of slippers takes a total of 120- 140 yards.You will be able to knit 3 single slippers from 2 skeins of Rauma Strikkegarn or Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (so if you have 2 skeins of each color, you can knit 3 pairs of slippers). You will be able to knit 2 pair with 1 skein of each color of Fleece and Harmony Selkirk.

Needles: Double-point needles 3.5mm/US 4

Gauge and Swatch
Swatch in colorwork. Women’s Slipper 24 stitches/24 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm
If you need a larger size, determine gauge, then move up a needle size for a roomier slipper. If you need a smaller size, go down a needle size (from gauge) or shrink them a bit by extra felting in hot water.
