This is the last iteration of the big chevron patterns for me, for now! Although it’s called Last Cowl because I couldn’t resist it, it’s really more of a hat pattern, making a hat that can be styled in a suble way or one that’s more court-jester-adjacent.

Use this basic template to make a seamless sideways version of the Flippy Chevron Cowl. The cowl is finished as a permanent horizontal loop, and functions as a fitted neckwarmer in doubled fabric.

You can make a matching hat—or a hat instead—by seaming one end of the cowl shut as shown in this .PDF’s hat instructions.

My sample is made from scraps of yarn from big box stores, plus Cascade
Heritage Wave in Nightshade and Malabrigo Yarns Sock in Turner. All knitting is done in the round on a single 16” circular needle, so you won’t have to keep track of DPNs—but you will need to keep track of increases and decreases, and stitch markers can help with that.

Materials:

• 350-400 yards soft sock yarn
• 1 16-24“ circular needle in US2-3/2.75-3.25mm, or size needed for gauge.
• 1 spare 16-24” circular needle in the same size, or one size down from size needed for gauge
• Tapestry needle
• 4 removable stitch markers

Gauge:
Gauge is 26 sts and 40 rows over 4”/10cm of stockinette stitch, worked in the round in pattern and blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.
