Beautiful name Lata means “vine” in Sanskrit. Inspired by the dance of intertwining vines, Lata Shawl translates them into a knitted form. The stitches of the fabric flow into each other bringing up an abundance of nupps that resemble the gentle buds ready to open up under the spring sun.

Lata shawl is worked from the corner up to the wide bind off edge. The pattern features a variety of textures including Japanese lace, nupps, twisted stitches, and embellished stockinette. A wide lace panel runs along one edge of the shawl, and two more narrow lace stripes spice up the stockinette. The shawl is finished off with decorative ribbing and some more nupps.

Perfect for mindful knitting sessions, this design requires knitter’s engagement in most rows. The pattern instructions are both charted and written out. Links to video tutorials for unusual stitches are provided as well.

Needles and Gauge

• US 3 / 3.25mm needles (straight or on a long cable) or the size needed to obtain gauge of:
• 26 sts and 28 rows in 4” / 10cm in Stockinette Stitch, blocked

Construction

• The shawl is worked flat from the bottom corner up. Increases made along the right edge shape the shawl as a triangle.

• Edge stitches are worked as a classic slipped selvage.

• The top is finished off with the decorative ribbing and the bind off that features nupps.

• An optional tassel can be added to the cast on point for a more polished look.
