Latvian Braid Fair Isle Mitts
I have made several pairs of mitts very similar to these using up bits and bobs of leftover sock yarns, mostly my own hand dyes and/or overdyes. And I love those mitts and have a pattern for them in the works. But when I received my post Christmas present for me shipment from Peacefleece with the lovely heathery colors of their Sport Weight yarns I just had to make these. The slightly heavier weight yarn works up at 7/inch (after blocking). The Peacefleece yarn blend (70/30 merino/mohair) blocks beautifully and has a delicious hefty warmth. Plus the mohair fluffs up and creates a delightful “halo” with washing and wearing.
This pattern will require some plain oatmeal knitting for the facings, some simple color work with absolutely no carries of more than 3 stitches so you can weave in or not just as you please, and the lovely Latvian Braid. This technique is show offey, but actually quite simple to make. It is a bit annoying because the yarns twist on the bottom of the braid….but then they untwist on the top. So the annoying bit doesn’t last long.
Also Mitts are a great vehicle for learning new techniques. You have enough chances to practice but the actual finished product is very quick to make. I made a single mitt in an afternoon. Do keep in mind, though, that I am a very fast and loose knitter. To get gauge you may need to use a larger needle than I suggest, and your working time will almost certainly vary.
If you wish to substitute colors here are my recommendations; you will need 1 light, 1 dark, and 2 brights. The brights work best if one is cool (blue/green) and one is warm (red/yelllow). If you wish to add more colors that is always wonderful -- but don’t use less than 4.
