I’ve been enamored with Latvian mittens since I first met Lizbeth Upitis at a Guild workshop back in the 90s! She taught me all the techniques and then some! Since then I’ve designed a new pair each year. I’m now re-working them using a lovely yarn I found from Lativa.
In this particular design the main motif comes from a book of Lativan charts. It reminds me of the Wasatch mountains that surround my home in Salt Lake City. Yes, a Basque, living in Utah, knitting Latvian mittens.

Mitten Details:
These mittens were designed using a yarn from Latvia - TINES - a . 100% pure wool. It knits up firm yet soft and the pattern detail stands out nicely.

I’ve used 5 colors - black, cream, red, gold and green. There’s two Latvian braids incorporated in the cuff. The thumb is knit separately and mirrors the mitten body pattern when you turn it down towards the cuff of the mitten (see photo).

More designs coming throughout the year!

Happy knitting!
