Construction and Size
This elongated triangular shawl begins with a garter tab cast on and works its way out from the center, increasing every row. Using three colors reveals a chevron pattern and the final section uses a ruffle. Pattern includes both written directions as well as charts for the stitch pattern. Worked in a worsted weight yarn with knits and purls, this is a shawl to keep you warm and cozy on a cold day (perhaps snuggle up in a comfy chair with a good book?).

Skills needed: knitting, purling, yarn overs, increases (make 1 left and right, kfb), changing colors (stripes)

Notes

• The ruffle section uses every bit of that color, so you may want to have an extra skein of the ruffle color on hand just in case. That way you could also make the ruffle larger if you’d prefer it to be more heavily featured.

About the Name
A French author, Chrétien de Troyes, wrote several Arthurian stories in the twelfth century. One of those was “Yvain, the Knight of the Lion.” In this story, Yvain falls in love with and marries Laudine, but a fellow knight convinces him that married life (staying around at home with his wife) is no life for a knight, so Yvain should leave his wife behind and go out on adventures. Laudine agrees to this—but only for one year. After that year, Yvain should return to her.

But Yvain has such a great time on his adventures that he forgets about going back to his wife after a year, so when he does try to return, she is not welcoming and refuses to let him return. Yvain is so upset that he goes mad (as in crazy) for a while but finally decides he must do something to win back his wife. After rescuing a lion, the lion becomes his companion and they continue on to defeat other enemies. On one of those adventures, he rescues a woman from being burned at the stake, and in return (after a few more adventures), she helps him reconcile with Laudine.
