Lava and Aurora Blankets
This crochet pattern provides detailed instructions to make two colourful blankets, one in warm colours (“Lava Blanket”) and the other one in cooler colours (“Aurora Blanket”). Each one is approximately 130 cm x 100 cm - the perfect size for a toddler or young child, or even to be used as a lap blanket by a teen or adult.
Although time-consuming to make, these blankets are strikingly beautiful, and will be forever treasured by those who receive them! These specific ones were made for my two older children (my daughter has always loved pinks, purples, and greens; my son is crazy about ‘fire’ colours).
The pattern calls for a 4.00 mm crochet hook, and self-striping rainbow-coloured DK yarn (alternatively, four different coloured yarns can be used for each blanket, and individual colours can be changed where necessary to achieve a similar result - specific details about this are provided in the pattern). Approximately 1800 g (4000 - 4500 m) are required to make the squares for both blankets. Half of these are worked individually, using the corner-to-corner technique (this is explained in detail in US terms). The remaining squares are worked in between, joining to those squares already made (these are also worked using the corner-to-corner technique, and detailed instructions for each ‘joining square’ are provided in the pattern).
The border of each blanket requires a solid colour DK yarn. I used yellow for the “Lava Blanket”, and purple for the “Aurora Blanket”, and used approximately 50 g (100 - 115 m) of each solid colour.
The only additional material required is a darning needle, with which to weave in the ends.
