Notes from the Designer:

I’ve chosen a French name “Lavande Papillon” for this pattern. It is a species of flowering plant that is also called French Lavender, and it is an evergreen shrub. Depending on the climate in which it grows, this flower blooms in spring and early summer, starting in the month of March in its native habitat. It reminds me of the beautiful weather on a sunny day, as I walk through a field of violet lavender flowers and dive into their comforting scent. I hope that when you make this shawl you are comforted and are able to delight in the beauty that surrounds you.

  • Click here to watch a tutorial on how to work all the special stitches used in this pattern, including the butterfly stitches.
  • The sample shown used approximately 1466 yds/1341 m total: Color A: 180 yds/165 m, Color B: 205 yds/187 m, Color C: 205 yds/187 m, Color D: 265 yds/242 m, Color E: 265 yds/242 m, and Color F: 346 yds/316 m.
  • Please read through the entire pattern before beginning to ensure you understand the instructions, stitches, and construction.
  • The shawl consists of two panels. Each panel is comprised of six parts, which feature either open-work Butterfly Wing stitches or randomly floating butterflies against a solid dc background.
  • After completing the first panel, the second will be worked in the same manner until the final row. There, the two are joined by working a decorative seam into both pieces simultaneously to form the final piece.
  • Both pieces are made in an identical manner. This means there is no RS or WS, as one panel will be flipped to the opposite side to form the final piece. This also makes the piece reversible; although the border appearance will differ slightly.
  • Throughout the pattern, there will be no turning chains. After finishing a row, you will turn as instructed, and work a Stacked Single Crochet into the top of the immediate first stitch. which is the last stitch from the previous row. Be careful to make each Ssc the height of a dc (or even slightly taller), or the edges will become cinched. This cannot be corrected during blocking.
  • Upon completing a row that ends with a HBFLW, turn your work to the right. This will help to direct the HBFLW towards the inside of the work.
