The Lawrence Hat is a beautiful ‘basic’ hat, worked in rib stitch 1x1. It’s your perfect ‘everyday’ hat. And although it is worked on 3 mm needles, it knits up pretty quickly! So you can make lots of hats in different colours! You can use 1 strand of fingering merino held together with a laceweight strand (such as a silk mohair, a suri alpaca or a laceweight cashmere) , or combine 2 strands of suri alpaca or use just 1 strand of yarn, as long as the gauge is a match.

It’s worked top-down, in the round. You start with a circular cast-on, after which you start making increases to shape the top. When the top is finished, you work your way down to the brim, in rib stitch 1x1. This design has a double folded brim: which means as much as a brim that is folded twice (triple thickness around the ears) bringing you extra warmth during the cold winter months. Because the hat is worked top-down, you can easily adjust the length to your own preferences. Just try on the hat while you are knitting it to see which length you prefer and then start working the brim. It should feel a bit snug at first. The hat wil grow a bit, as it is worked in a 1x1 rib stitch. You can always sew in an elastic thread to ensure the hat keeps it shape.

The design includes 2 options for the brim:
1. A ‘double folded’ brim: which means you knit the hat to the preferred length, after which you bind off the stitches using an italian bind off and then fold the brim twice (for triple thickness as mentioned above and shown in the pictures). As the bind off edge is not visible, you are free to use another bind off than the Italian bind off, just make sure it is stretchy enough!). If you prefer a single folded brim, you can adjust the pattern easily: work the total length as mentioned under option 2 and then add the length of the brim you would like. Then work the italian bind off and fold your brim once.

1. A ‘closed’ double folded brim: in this version you turn your work when you’ve reached the length you desire, work a turning stitch (similar to working the ‘turning stitch’ for German Short Rows), and then continue in rib stitch 1x1. When you’ve worked the total length of the brim, you turn your work again (back to the right side of your work), fold the brim and sew it or close it while binding off the stitches. You then fold the brim again to create the triple thickness as mentioned above.

I made the 2nd option specifically for all those people who struggle with a double folded brim (like my kids for example) :) This is a solution which has the same effect as a double folded brim, but you just need to fold it once after closing the brim.
