Layla's Summer Hat
This pattern is undergoing an update.
Knitting this hat is as much fun as it is satisfying! It is knit continually using short rows to shape the hat.
There are four versions for knitting this hat: solid with regular brim, solid with laced edge, with a white trim going around the base of the hat, and the striped version. Intarsia knitting is required only for the last two versions.
One ball of Rowan’s Summerlite DK is enough for all the sizes except the largest, which requires a bit more.
The sizes are 0-3 months, 6-9 months, 9-12 months, and 18 months-3 years.
The recommended needle size is US2 or 2.75 mm. You will be needing a pair of circular (or straight needles). Please be sure to check the gauge and use bigger or smaller needles to get the correct tension.
This pattern has been test-knit by Amber Joyal, Andra Daines, Nina Talbot, and Maria Worren; and tech edited by Madeleine Windsor.
A few notes to keep in mind:
-
When you first finish it, the hat may seem smaller than you expected. This is because there’s a 1-2” negative ease around the hat circumference, which means it stretches by 1-2 inches. Garter stitch is VERY stretchy, but those cables (not as stretchy) will keep the hat in place.
-
Wet blocking is essential to get the brim spread out in circular shape.
