It started with the idea of airy summer socks that were not boring to knit and had enough texture to show even in selfstriping yarn. When I was finished it reminded me of the french river Le Lot which winds between cliffs and is framed by pebbles.

Technically the socks are knit toe up with a short row heel. The pattern zigzags with a mixture of seed stitch, stockinette and lace pattern over the back of the foot (crossing a bit over to the sole) and then all around the leg. For even more interest left and right sock are mirrored.

The pattern is partially written, partially charted and refers to knitting with two cable needles. It can be done with magic loop or dpns also, though with dpns it might be a bit more complicated because the yo of the lace pattern shifting over the needles.

I am a very loose knitter, so most people will probably need slightly bigger needles, choose what gives you the right gauge (31st/10cm). The socks are a bit on the wide side, when you have slim feet you can take out some stitches from the stockinette part or use thinner yarn and smaller needles.

Since the socks are for summer they are best knit with a cotton-wool 4ply sock wool blend, non wool sock yarn should work also.

Have fun!
