Leaf Hooded Cowl
Leaf Hooded Cowl is sort of a leaf-looking hooded cowl! It’s a dk/worsted version of the Echo kerchief—or at least a version of the same concept, since it’s not a faithful recreation at a different gauge. It uses a slightly different set of shapes to create a hooded version of a cowl with a leaf-like/kerchief element.
Use scraps, like I did, or use your own handspun, a commercial self-striping yarn, or even a nice solid neutral. I used both dk and worsted weight yarns for my sample, and tried to make the most of my vibrant-fall-colors scrap collection.
This project is worked both flat and in the round, at different stages. It also uses short rows, although even in this case, the work is relatively simple and easy to memorize.
Materials:
- 730 yds of dk/worsted yarn; sample shown in scraps of Cascade 220 Superwash, Malabrigo Yarns Rios, Malabrigo Yarns Arroyo, and Noro Silk Garden
- 1 set of DPNs and 1 48” circular needle in US7-8/4.5-5.0mm, or size needed for gauge.
- Optional: 16” circular needle in size needed for gauge, or any other comfortable circular length. There are points where you’ll need to use magic loop if you’re using a long circular.
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Removable stitch markers
Gauge:
Gauge is 18 sts and 38 rows over 4”/10cm of garter stitch, worked flat and blocked. Please be sure to check your gauge.
