Leafbirds are attractive song birds in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. They are brightly plumaged, with a predominant green over the body. This lace weight cardigan is inspired by the lightness of feathers and the habitat of Leafbirds. The leaf motifs on the back of the cardigan are a simple and bold expression with a delicate material. The cardigan is oversized to give it an airy and comfortable feel. Lace with wing motifs on both shoulders continue along the half length sleeves. Plain stockinette fabric on the front features the lightness and drape of lace weight yarn.

NOTES AND TECHNIQUES

This cardigan is knit flat sideways beginning from the back. Short rows shape the main fabric and leaf motifs. Front stitches are picked up from the back and worked flat in Stockinette stitch. Shoulder lace is worked separately, and joined with sleeve stitches, picked up and worked in the round. The shoulder lace is then seamed to the front and back.

The construction is interesting and may be new to a few knitters. Schematics are included to make the instructions easier to follow.

This design has a lot of positive ease built into the pattern. Each size can fit a large range of bust measurements. The suggested ease is different for different measurements.

One 3 mm / US 2½ circular needle, 60 cm / 24” or longer.
One 3.25 mm / US 3 circular needle, 60 cm / 24” or longer.
3 mm / US 2½ and 3.25 mm / US 3 circular needles for working magic loop or double-pointed needles for working small circumferences for sleeves
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

NOTIONS

Stitch markers (4), removable stitch marker (1), tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.

GAUGE

23 sts and 36 rows = 10 cm / 4” in Stockinette st with MC, using 3.25 mm / US 3 needle, after blocking.

Leafbird（コノハドリ）はインド亜大陸と東南アジアに棲む美しい鳴き鳥で, 全体的に鮮やかな緑色の羽根をしています. この極細糸で編むカーディガンは, コノハドリの軽やかな羽根とその生息場所からインスピレーションを得てデザインしました. 後ろ身頃のリーフモチーフは繊細な素材を使った, シンプルかつ大胆な表現です. カーディガンは軽さと心地良さを出すため, オーバーサイズのデザインです. 肩の羽根模様のレースは五分丈の袖に続き, 前身頃はプレーンなメリヤス編みで, 極細糸の軽やかさとドレープを引き立てます.

ポイントと技法

往復編みで, 脇から横方向に編みます. 後ろ身頃から編み始め, 引返し編みを使って身頃の地とリーフモチーフを形づくります. 前身頃の目は後ろ身頃脇から拾い, メリヤス編みで往復編みします. 肩のレースパネルは別に編み始め, 袖の目を身頃から拾った後は輪で一緒に編みます. レースパネルは最後に前肩と後ろ肩ととじて合わせます.
