Add a little foliage to your wardrobe. This slouchy beret knits up in a snap and adds a touch of whimsy to any cool weather ensemble. The leaf lace pattern is simple and adds some texture to the hat. This is an easy knit, suitable for a beginner with a bit of experience.
Also take a look at the matching finger-less mittens, which require only one skein of yarn for the pair in my Ravelry shop.

ERRATA:
The increase row after the ribbing is incorrect and should read k2, m1
If using yarnover, that becomes k2, yo.
If using kfb, which is what the oringinal photos have, that becomes k1, kfb.

Notes:

  • In the round – using dpns or magic loop
  • Knitted bottom up so that you can fit the brim first.
  • Exact gauge is not essential.
  • Original to fit a 23” head. For smaller sizes, go down to a smaller size needle, or knit regularly then gather and sew a small section of the brim to itself like a pleat to tighten the brim. For larger sizes, go up a needle size. It will stretch a little bit once it is off the needles. There is also the possibility of sewing elastic or weaving elastic inside the stitches of the brim, but this would take a bit of hand sewing skills.

Acrylic yarns can be “blocked” using an iron, but this hat is meant to be slouchy and Hometown USA holds its shape pretty well for the purpose. Wool yarns can be stretched over a plate or similar shape to wet block the beret shape.

  • If you would like a plain beret, simply omit the lace parts of the pattern and replace them with stockinette etc, and also keeping the structural decreases, increase row, and brim instructions.

Finished dimensions:
Laid flat, about 10” diameter, and 9’’ from bottom of brim to very top

You will need:

  • 1 skein (a little less than the full 81 yards) super chunky yarn such as Lion Brand Hometown USA
  • (6.0mm) US size 10 double pointed or circular needles for brim or (6.5 mm or 7.0mm if you need something larger)
  • (9.0mm) US size 13 double pointed or circular needles for body of hat

Stitch Abbreviations:
k - knit
p – purl
yo – yarn over
k2tog – knit 2 together (right leaning decrease)
ssk – slip 2 stitches as if to knit, place back on the left needle and knit them together (left leaning decrease)
s2k1psso – slip 2 stitches, knit 1, pass 2 slipped stitches over knit stitch (center double decrease)
* * - section repeat
k2tog – italicized - the structural decreases that shape the hat, not part of the lace motif
