Leanaí
This pattern was written as a tribute to a friend who cared for many, many children throughout her lifetime.
Born, adopted, fostered, or watched while parents worked, it didn’t matter. All were loved. Even at the very end, when Alzheimer’s had taken almost the last memories of family and friends, she still lit up at the sight of a child.
Leanaí (LAHN-ee), meaning “children,” recalls both her Irish heritage and the love she shared with the children of her life.
Leanaí is knit from end to end, forming a shallow crescent with a knitted on edge. Knit almost entirely in garter stitch (there are some purl stitches, but not too many!) It is a meditative knit that is easily memorized.
Any weight yarn can be used and needle size will vary depending on the type chosen. Blocking is optional. The garter stitch is very “squishy”, for a more drape-y shawl, consider blocking.
There are two separate versions: line by line and charted. It is possible to download either, or both.
The Longest Day Challenge: to honor those whose every day is the Longest Day and those who love them.
All proceeds from the sale of Leanaí will go to the Alzheimer’s Association forever. Last year’s pattern, Volo, raised almost $300.
Errata in written version downloaded prior to 6/17/2014 late evening
Row 14 needs “sm, knit to end” added in each of the sections.
