Leander begins with twisted rib, morphing into a traveling current of brioche rib shaped to follow a sinuous course by a combination of decorative increases and decreases. This directional shaping also lends gentle curves along the scarf’s outer edges, fluidly framing the neck and the shoulders when draped. Worked in woolen-spun Shelter, Leander makes for a gratifying combination of tactile indulgence and lofty warmth.

Construction

This scarf is worked in two pieces, each from the cast-on edge to the center. The pieces are then joined.

Yarn

  • 5 skeins of Brooklyn Tweed Shelter (100% American Targhee-Columbia wool; 140 yards/50 grams)

  • Photographed in colors Flannel and Hayloft

Yardage

  • 630 yards of worsted weight wool yarn

Gauge

  • 13¼ stitches & 39 rows = 4″ in Purled Brioche Rib with Size A needle, after blocking

Note that for Brioche Rib, each elongated stitch in a column of knit stitches represents two rows; when you count these it will appear that 19½ rows = 4”.

Needles

Size A (for Main Fabric)

  • One circular needle* (any length) in size needed to obtain gauge listed

  • Suggested Size: 4 mm (US 6)

Size B (for Tubular Cast On and Ribbing)

  • One circular needle* (any length), two sizes smaller than Size A

  • Suggested Size: 3½ mm (US 4)

*Scarf may be worked on straight needles if preferred, but circular needles are required for joining the two halves.

Finished Dimensions
