Learn to knit sampler blanket
I created this pattern for a beginners knitting class I taught. I needed something easy so beginners could learn their basic stitches. The first square teaches your basic knit and purl stitches. The second square lets you practice moving the yarn back and forth while you create a nice basketweave pattern. The third square teaches you increases and decreases as you make a diagonal square. The fourth square teaches some basic lace stitches. The fifth square uses up both colors and is a simple mosaic stitch (where you slip the opposite color from the row below).
You make 9 squares, 2 of each color plus one mosaic square for the center.
This blanket is made using 2 colors, so you need 2 balls of white or cream and 2 balls of a solid color; however I had about half a ball of each color left over. Variegated colors won’t work on the mosaic pattern; I tried it and had to change to a solid color to be able to see the pattern.
The finished size was about 48” (120cm) square.
One of my students made a baby blanket using just one of the squares, but just adding more stitches and rows to make it larger.
