Leaves in a Gothic Window
Large-size doily / table topper with central medallion design surrounded by graceful clusters of leaves. The finished size will depend on the hook size selected. The 21” diam. doily requires 500 yd. size 10 cotton crochet thread, and the 25” diam. doily requires 800 yd. size 10 cotton crochet thread.
The piece from which I derived this pattern was crocheted by my great-grandmother Julia Ann (Dodd) Stratton before 1944 (probably in the 1920s). She used her doily as a cover for her velvet organ stool.
Several years ago, my elderly aunt sent the doily to me, asking me to repair it. It had a large rust-stain in the center, along with several broken threads. Because the thread was weak and easily broken, I crocheted a new one (rather than repairing the old one), taking the pattern from the original, and writing down the pattern as I went. I have since crocheted several more doilies from this pattern.
