Aran or worsted weight. Any yarn that can be worked at gauge, a thicker yarn would need to be worked tighter which works well for a beret.

16” circular needle & a set of double pointed needles, in size to obtain gauge, US #5, #6 or #7. 9 stitch markers and a hanging row marker.

Cable cast-on is used to create a nice looking and elastic edge. In the ribbing the knit stitch is worked through the back loop in order to create a tighter rib and better stitch definition. Note that it is important to work a swatch to gauge or the Beret will not fit properly.

Change to double point needles when the circular needle becomes too short to work comfortably. It is easier to place the hat on four needles and knit with the fifth needle.
