This Rose features independently poseable petals and a flat back. The innovative design is made from one continuous thread, requires no sewing, rolling or stiffener and is surprisingly lightweight for it’s size. Start to finish takes hours… not days.

Although designed for brooches, boutonnieres & appliques which benefit from having the back of the rose be flat, it can very easily be put on a stem too!

It can be made with 12 to 16 petals and a slightly higher center (more like a tea rose) if desired, all options are covered in the tutorial. This is a VERY versatile pattern!

This comprehensive photo tutorial pattern (15 pages, 102 photos, 8.3MB) will show you how to make this graceful and realistic Rose. Separate text-only instructions (3 pages, 262KB) are given for two versions of the sepals/calyx (flat for brooches and 3D for a stem) and 2 versions of the leaf all using the same techniques learned while making the rose. The photo tutorial includes assembling the pieces onto a stick pin (only takes a couple of minutes!) as well as onto a stem.

Also included is a condensed text-only excerpt of just the written instructions from the rose tutorial, 3 pages (54KB) and no photos saves ink! The numbered steps correspond to the photos of the tutorial which you can view on your favorite device if you prefer not to print the full tutorial.

You will need a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader or PDF-XChange to view or print the files.

Materials:
DMC Cebelia crochet thread or other tightly wound cotton thread & appropriately sized hook.

Recommended:
Size 10 thread & 1.75mm hook (flower approx 2.25” across) OR
Size 20 thread & 1.5mm hook (flower approx 2.0” across) OR
Size 30 thread & 1.25mm hook (flower approx 1.75” across)

The shank of the hook needs to be able to hold up to 11 loops for the rose. If your hooks don’t allow this, or you find it too crowded, consider getting a cro-tat hook (2mm to use with size 10 thread). PRYM is a brand that is inexpensive & widely available online. It’s unlikely to be an issue with size 20 thread & smaller. (I use Clover Amour hooks and have no problem making these with size 10 thread on a 1.75mm.)

Suggested Materials:
Stick pin, rubber band, cotton swab & tapestry needle. - OR - 18 gauge stem wire, floral tape, yellow thread, glue, rubber band, cotton swab & tapestry needle.

Gauge:
Not essential. Tighter stitches make the rose easier to shape when using size 10 thread. The finer the thread you use, the looser you can make the stitches.

This rose uses a Tunisian Crochet stitch which is fully explained step by step and no prior experience with Tunisian Crochet is needed. This tutorial is appropriate for a very motivated intermediate to experienced crocheter. Patience and ability to follow instructions is more important than a specific experience level as long as you have the required skills.

I also have a similar rose pattern designed to be used with a wire stem. It’s a little quicker/easier but not as versatile; it’s not ideal if you wish to make brooches & boutonnieres and cannot be used as a applique. It’s perfect for bouquets though and the LEFT handed version can be found at:
