About once a week my family has what we call a ‘left-over round-up’ meal. It is pretty much what it sounds like! We gather up all the leftovers in the fridge and we each pick what we want to eat! It is a great way to use up all the little ‘bits’, like that one lonely cheeseburger or half a bowl of greek salad.

I was looking at my yarn shelf one day and I knew I needed to do something with all the little bits of hand-dyed yarn I had leftover from other projects. They were mostly 40 grams or less of yarn. Not enough to make…well anything! To be honest a scrappy blanket or scarf didn’t really appeal to me. I do love to make beanies.

And so the Leftover Round up beanie was born. Using a base yarn and pairing it with the leftover scraps I was able to create a gorgeous hat with texture and beautiful contrast. I hope you enjoy seeing the colors you choose work up together as much as I have.

The variations are endless. You can use variegated, speckled, solid, or even three or four different coloured yarn to create a striped effect.

Materials:

-US H/8 (5.00mm) hook
-US I (5.5mm or J 6.00mm) hook
-Worsted weight yarn (main color) approximately 145 yards (I used Lionbrand Touch of Alpaca)
-Contrasting yarn, can use fingering, Dk, OR worsted weight. You will need approximately 30-35 yards.
-Scissors
-Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:

sc- single crochet
st- stitch
slst- slip stitch
hdc- half double crochet
hdc2tog- half double crochet two stitches together
sc2tog- single crochet two stitches together

Gauge:

Note: Gauge is not super important as you can follow the measurements.

Worked in hdc stitches using a J/6.00mm hook with worsted (#4) and fingering (#2) yarn held together my gauge was:

12 hdc across and 9 rows = 4”x4” square
