Is it a shawl, a wrap, or a scarf? It’s all three!

This gorgeous cabled wrap has a shawl collar to keep the back of your neck warm, whether you wear it over your coat as a decorative accessory, or as an indoor accessory. Alternatively, wrap it around twice, with the shawl collar covering your mouth and chin, in self defense against winter’s bitter cold. (I live in Minnesota. These sorts of considerations are important!) Lose the shawl collar, and select a lighter yarn, and you’ve got a wrap that works in milder weather.

The shawl features nine traveling cable motifs (there are really five, as the last four are reversals of the first four), most adapted from motifs found in Elsebeth Lavold’s books. This is no boring rectangle of repetitiveness!

Charts and Written instructions
There are three PDFs for this pattern. Most knitters will need only two: the general written instructions and then either the charted patterns or the written instructions for the cabled section.

Yarn
Note that the yarn called for is marketed as a bulky yarn, but many consider it an Aran weight yarn. Eco+ is recommended to be knit at 4 sts/in, and it has a nice loft (it’s not dense). Keep this in mind when substituting yarns.

Needles
The larger needle size recommended is based on the needle size I used to knit this wrap. I knit tight on large needles. You may need a smaller needle to get the same gauge with the recommended yarn. The smaller needle is used for picking up sts.

Gauge and Size information
Knit at the gauge recommended on your ball band to get the appropriate fabric drape. Because the design is worked to a specified number of stitches and rows, changes in size can and will occur if you work your project with a different gauge than called for in the pattern. Your row gauge will determine the length of the shawl.

When worked to the recommended gauge, the finished measurements are as follows:
Length of inner scarf: 65”
Width of scarf at central motif 7.5”, without ribbing
Length of scarf, including ribbing: 68”
Width of scarf including ribbing, at widest point
shawl collar folded: 12”
collar unfolded 14.25”

Construction overview
Central cabled section is knit first
Stitches are picked up and bottom border is worked
Stitches are picked up and top border with shawl collar is worked
Border edges are joined and seamed
Alternate instructions for working the border in the round (eliminating the two small seams) are also provided
