Leilani Wall Hanging
This is the third pattern in a series of patterns which utilize my favorite stitch: the half double crochet in the very back loop. I’m naming this one after my nana, Leilani. She and my mom started teaching me to crochet when I was four years old. Many of my favorite memories include crocheting with them in Nana’s living room, and the bright colors and boho style of this wall hanging reminds me of my Nana who is effortlessly chic, vibrant, and unique.
What You’ll Need:
Tools: 4.00 mm crochet hook (or hook needed to obtain gauge), scissors, and a a wooden dowel. I used a 12-inch bamboo dowel from a very affordable pack I got at Joann. You could also use any sort of stick for a more rustic look!
Yarn: At least 50 yards each of three or four colors of DK weight yarn. This allows you to have enough to customize any tassels or poms you’d like to add to the wall hanging. I used DK acrylic from various brands. This can be a great stash-busting project!
Construction Notes:
I’ve designed this pattern to both have the texture of the bobbles and half double crochets on the right/front side of the wall hanging and to have as few ends to weave in as possible. I’ve noted in the pattern where you can do color changes simply by carrying the yarn up the side - so just trust the process.
To obtain gauge using the yarn weight and dowel size in the pattern, I recommend completing the first two rows of the pattern and measuring them lengthwise once the chevron shapes have been created. At that point, your work should measure 11” across or shorter. You can adjust your hook size accordingly to obtain gauge.
You can absolutely play around with the weight of your yarn and size of your dowel/rod/stick. However, make sure that after you complete your first two rows, your work measures at least an inch shorter than the total length of your dowel/stick/rod to ensure it will fit properly.
