Let It Snow Fair Isle Christmas Stocking
A traditional Christmas stocking knit in the Fair Isle style. Fair Isle stranded knitting is defined by pattern and color. Especially important is that no more than two colors are used in any one row or round.
Kits are available from Heritage Soinning and Weaving.
Skill: Experienced. Knitting in the round, two-color stranded knitting, following a chart, and short rows.
Size: 13”/33 cm in circumference; approx 20’’/50.8 cm top to toe. To make a smaller stocking, go down needle size. Both of these yarns knit up lovely using a needle as small as US Size 1/2.25 mm for the main part of the stocking.
Gauge: Approximately 32 sts = 4”/10 cm in pattern in the round. Since this will not be worn, as long as you like the fabric you are getting, use this gauge as a guide and not an absolute.
Yarn: Fingering weight, five shades of Jamieson & Smith Shetland Heritage or Jamieson Spindrift.
Needles: Using US Size 2.5 (3.0mm) and US 2 (2.75 mm) for circular knitting and set of US 2.5 (3.0 mm) double pointed needles (for Figure 8 cast on and i-cord) or size to achieve gauge.
Notions: Three stitch markers in two colors, tapestry needle.
