Letharia vulpine is a bright yellow-green lichen found on living or dead conifers at the prairie-forest boundary in southern Alberta. Wolf lichen, as it is more commonly known, grows at all elevations in lodgepole pine forests. This lichen is somewhat toxic due to many mammals due to the yellow pigment vulpinic acid. Indigenous groups have historically used this lichen as a source for dyes and paints. The colour of this bright lichen is the inspiration for this simple colourwork and eyelet lace cowl.
