Nigella blossoms are one of the prettiest flowers of the annual garden, with a pretty name to match, not the Latin name of Nigella Damascena, but the ever so whimsical Love-In-A-Mist… l.i.a.m.!

The elongated loop stitch pattern reminded me of beautiful nigella flowers. The slightly oversized beret shape helps to add warmth without a lot of bulk, and is forgiving to hair, even my petulant curls are presentable when the hat is removed. The size and shape also allows for you to tuck up even a sizeable amount of crowning glory within.

The rolled brim has 2 size options, one small-medium and one large. The beret proper is the same size for both. A relatively simple knit, Liam is worked in the round from the rolled brim to the crown and can be done in an evening or two. Both versions pictured were made with pure wool. Other fibres to consider would be bamboo, cotton, linen, or hemp blends for springtime temperatures. Keep in mind that the blossoms will be somewhat obscured with a variegated or textured yarn.

You will need 100grams of Aran or Worsted weight wool having 160-170m in total. I cast on using 3.5mm straight pins, used a 60cm 4.0mm circular needle for the first 2/3 of so of the work then switched to 4.0mm dpns to finish.
