This hat is named after our German Oma’s village of Lichtenberg. It was such a small village, it didn’t even have a bar! We used to spend our summers at our Oma’s house, and this is where we were able to indulge in our crafty endeavours. Our Oma was a master tailor and prolific sock-knitter, so we had lots of her scrap fabric and yarn with which to play. The stranded knitting colourwork pattern mimics the look of stockinette stitch, a pattern that, to me, is quintessentially German.

The Lichtenberg Hat pattern works best in a two colours of worsted weight yarn in differing values. Here, I used a natural white as the main colour, and a rich yellow as the contrast colour.

The foldover brim and the double layer of yarn in the colourwork ensures that the hat will be warm.

The Lichtenberg Hat pattern has two sizes, but you can use thinner yarn and thinner needles to knit smaller hats for babies and children.

Level of Difficulty: Beginner

Sizing: Toddler and Adult sizes. You can also use different needles and thickness of yarn to knit a child-sized hat.
