I was invited by Tamanojo (Tama), the owner of Knitters Without Borders LLC, a yarn shop in the U.S., to make an original sock bag using Tamayura yarn and Knitail’s patterns.
As soon as I heard about the project, I immediately thought of Tama’s shop’s logo, a squirrel flying with a shawl. This is how Life of Musasabi - Japanese flying squirrel - was born.
The logo brought to mind a forest growing from seeds that flying squirrels drop when flying from tree to tree, or nuts and buds, food of flying squirrels. Do they live alone or in a family? I imagined Japanese flying squirrels leaving Japanese forests and living in the forests in Arizona, like Tama, who has left Japan.
Following Tama’s idea of popularizing sock knitting, I used easy-to-knit stitches in this pattern.

Needles
1 x US 1 (2.25 mm) circular needle (32” / 80 cm)
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions
Markers, cable needle, tapestry needle, scissors

Pattern Note
The instructions are written using the magic loop method with a circular needle. The socks are worked from the cuff down in the round and Jump Stitch (Type 1) or Fruits & Nuts Stitch (Type 2) is worked over the leg.
On completion of the heel flap worked back and forth and gusset stitches picked up, the foot is worked again in the round. Lastly toe stitches are grafted.

アメリカで毛糸屋さんをなさっているKnitters Without Borders LLCの店主の玉之丞さん (タマさん)からお声がけいただき、Tamayura yarnのタマユラさんの糸とKnitailのパターンをセットにしたオリジナルのソックスバッグを作る機会をいただきました！ Life of Musasabi Socksはそのためにデザインさせていただいた靴下です.
お話をいただいてすぐにタマさんのお店のアイコンであるショールで飛ぶムササビを想像してみました.
木から木へとジャンプした時に飛んだ種で森が育つ様子やムササビのごはんである木の実や芽, 一匹？家族がいる？など, 日本を飛び出したタマさんのように日本の森から飛び出してアリゾナの森に暮らすムササビの暮らしをイメージした靴下です.
靴下編みを広めたいというタマさんのコンセプトを基に, 編みやすい模様を盛り込みました.

輪針のマジックループを使用した方法で解説している. 履き口から輪で編み, 脚でType 1はJump Stitchを, Type 2はFruits & Nuts Stitchの模様を編む.
かかとは往復編みをし, まちを拾い, 再び輪編みでつま先まで編む. 最後はメリヤスはぎでとじる.
