This is a crochet pattern and video tutorial showing how to crochet an easy bauble ornament worked in simple half double crochet stitches and lightweight yarn. Three sizes included – perfect to create a fun variety of ornaments.

Personalized ornaments are one of my favorite things to gift each holiday season. You can change up the colors to better match the recipients theme, or embellish with buttons or appliques.

I made the fun white ornaments as gifts a couple years ago and hand stitched initials onto them, but I think they look like snowballs, and would be great for a winter woodland themed tree!

We’re changing up our holiday decor this year (2023) so I went with orange for my ornaments – this is what you’ll see in the video tutorial.

You can easily leave off the hanger, and use these as decorative balls around the house, like in a basket.

Materials:

• Small Amount of Lightweight (#3) Yarn - I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn Sportweight in Red, and Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight in Airplane Gray and Angel
• G6/4mm Crochet Hook
• Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
• Soft Tape Measure (gauge is essential if using a ball/bauble)
• Either Styrofoam Balls – 2.4″ for Small, 2.8″ for Medium, and 3.8″ for Large (Got mine from Hobby Lobby) - bauble ornaments with the same diameters, or stuffing
• Optional: Stitch Marker or Waste Yarn – I like to use Locking Stitch Markers

Material Notes:
My favorite yarn to use for Christmas ornaments is Lion Brand Vanna’s Glamour. Sadly, it’s been discontinued. You may still be able to find some here on Etsy or other sites. With the metallic strands in it, it’s perfect for the holidays! You can experiment with other #2 and #3 weight yarns - just check gauge along the way.

In my original design, and with many of the ornaments I make, I designed to cover styrofoam balls, but the small size also works great to cover ornaments from Dollar Tree that come in a tube of 7 (and measure 7½” in circumference), which is what I’m using in the video because I wanted to have the hanger at the top. Alternatively, you could also stuff the ornaments.

Keep in mind that the measurements given are ball diameters, not the circumference. If you have a ball at home, and you want to see if it’ll fit the measurements I’ve provided (or you want to work to a custom size), you’ll want to measure all the way around the ball, which is the circumference, then divide by pi, which is 3.14.

Time Spent:
The medium sized one took me just under 45 minutes to complete.

In the Round, 36 (60) HDC = 2 1/4” (4”) in diameter
