This baby-sized, v-neck vest is the knitting equivalent of a “oner”.

In movie making, a oner is a continuous shot captured by a camera without any cuts or edits.

This vest is worked down the top left front, up the top back, down the top right front, around the arm and neck holes (in ribbing or icord) and down the body (with or without the cable pattern) without ever cutting the yarn, and it comes off the needles completed.

It gets its name from the little twist in the provisional cast on, between the underarm and back, caused by the underarm being worked in one direction and the back in the other.

Why just the one size?

This is the size I typically knit for baby showers. Much smaller and it’s outgrown too quickly, much larger and it takes too long to grow into. This size also uses two 75 yard balls of worsted weight yarn with just 7 yards left over, and fits comfortably on 24” circular needles. It’s a great size for quickly trying out construction ideas for oners, which can then be applied to existing patterns in a variety of sizes.

It’s a fun puzzle, figuring out ways to get from A to Z without making a cut.

Happy Knitting!
